Project Brief:
Type Specimen Poster (17 × 22” in Indesign):
Design a poster that communicates the essential characteristics of your assigned typeface family. Keep in mind all of the design principles you’ve studied thus far, and have a concept. Your poster should include the following content:
Typeface name, date of origin, designer’s name, uppercase alphabet (A–Z), lowercase alphabet (a–z), figures (0123456789), punctuation, optional: short paragraph detailing the history of your typeface. Graphic elements can function as images and you should have a large showing of your typeface to draw attention to its characteristics.
Magazine Spreads (8.5 × 11” pgs / 17 × 11” Indesign spreads):
Design a 4-page (2-spread) article using the content generated from your research paper. This means you might need to edit down your paper from 1000 words to a length more suitable for the article. You should devise a typographic system for the following elements:
Article title, article subhead, body copy (use at least 5–6 paragraphs, image captions, running header or footer, folios (i.e. page numbers), pull quote(s).
You should use the typeface family you were assigned, along with a complementary typeface family of your choosing. In addition to the system of typographic hierarchy you devise, you should also use a grid to structure your compositions. You should incorporate at least one photographic image in your article. Additionally, graphic elements made in Adobe Illustrator can function as images and you may want to have a large showing of your typeface to draw attention to its characteristics.
